NVQ FAQs

Commonly Asked Questions About NVQs in the UK

NVQs are becoming increasingly sought after in the construction and insulation industry across Britain. They exemplify and recognise those who have the skills and knowledge to perform certain tasks and responsibilities.

Throughout our many years of providing NVQs to professionals, we have collated a list of commonly asked questions that our customers want to know the answers to.

1. Why are NVQs important in the construction industry?

When you get a specific level of NVQ, whether that is level 2, 3, 4, 6 or 7, you can then be eligible to apply for a CSCS card depending on the level of NVQ you have. This provides direct evidence of an individual’s competence and ability to perform certain tasks and duties related to construction/insulation.

Employers are constantly seeking new talent, therefore, having a CSCS card will be recognised by most (if not all) that you have a certain level of skill. Taking an NVQ is fundamental for many employment opportunities.

2. How are NVQs assessed?

This differs from company to company, but there are a variety of ways to assess an NVQ. For example, the assessment can be conducted onsite, meaning that you can continue to work while passing your NVQ. You will be observed and evaluated while you work to see if you meet the level of competency.

Other methods may include some written work or professional discussions that prove your experience in the industry and with the specific assessment you are taking.

3. What are the different levels of NVQ available?

You have the level 1 NVQ which is entry level, then after which it follows as:

Level 2: Craftsperson

Level 3: Supervisor or Advanced Craftsperson

Level 4: Site Manager

Levels 6 & 7: Senior Management

4. How long does it take to complete an NVQ?

This answer greatly differs depending on the level of NVQ you are taking. For the lower stages of NVQ, this can be around several weeks. However, to get a Level 6 or 7 NVQ, can take 2-12 months depending on your experience and the evidence you can provide.
