6 Sun Protection Tips for Working on a Construction Site

Construction Site Safety with Think Construction Skills

As we approach summer, it is important to address a huge health and safety concern on the construction site, and that is, sun protection.

While I am sure you think your hardhat provides enough shade to protect you from the sun, unfortunately it does not. In order to keep yourself healthy while working in the sun, there are certain things that may be important for you to do.

So, what are some great sun protection tips for working on construction sites this summer?

1.      Avoid the Sun

This is as simple as it sounds. From 11AM to 3PM, then sun’s UV rays are at their strongest, therefore, if you can, avoid the sun between these times, this will reduce the risk of sun burn, dehydration and other nasty side effects of working in direct sun light.

2.      Cover Yourself

Of course, there will be many occasions where you cannot simply avoid the sun, therefore, what is important is that you cover up. Yes, it may be hot to work in an outfit that covers you completely, but you will thank yourself for it later. Just wearing your Hi-Viz vest leaves you exposed and at risk of sun damage. By covering up as much skin as possible, you can protect yourself.

Now, we don’t mean to wear jumpers and thick heavy clothing, but you can wear breathable fabrics and lightweight clothing that doesn’t make you feel too hot and provides sufficient protection when working on a construction site.

3.      Sun Cream

Perhaps we should have started with this one. Yes, sun cream works, and you should be using it. Make sure to cover exposed areas with sun cream, we recommend using a cream that is at least SPF 30. Even if you are not working in direct sunlight, UV rays bounce off of water, sand and other materials/objects, so there is no harm in just applying some before you start your shift.

4.      Reapplying Sun Cream

There is a good rule of thumb to stick by, and that is applying sun cream every 2 hours, probably a bit sooner if you tend to sweat a lot. By reapplying sun cream, you can make sure that you are giving yourself the best chance of sun protection whilst working on a construction site.

5.      Stay Hydrated

Drinking water is a no brainer. Whether it is summer, winter, spring or autumn, keeping yourself hydrated is always important. However, during summer and working in the heat, you become tired and dehydrated a lot easier, therefore, keep on refilling your water bottles and hydrating yourself, this will help you work better and keep yourself stable throughout the working day.

6.      Sunglasses

Sunglasses, with UV protection, can be a great investment to protect you from the sun. By investing in a decent pair of sunglasses, you can expect less squinting and more efficient working and definitely safer working as the brightness will bother you a lot less. Bonus, you will look fashionable on the construction site.
